São José do Rio Preto sits in the north-west of São Paulo state. An engineer from the EFA railway, Antônio Tavares Pereira Lima, gathered 53 sportsmen and journalists from the local papers in the Hotel São Paulo on 28 January that year. The meeting settled on América, after the Rio club, whose crest and whose devil mascot they took along with the name.

América won the Paulista second-tier title in 1957 , again in 1963, and a third time in 1999, when Marcinho led the line. Twice, in 1978 and 1980, the club reached the national Série A and finished 38th and 32nd; it has never won the Paulista A1.

The one national trophy came from the youth ranks. In 2006 América took the Copa São Paulo de Futebol Júnior, beating Comercial — from the same city — in the final, and the tie turned on goalkeeper André Zuba, a product of the club's own academy, who saved two penalties.

Before him there was Negão, another academy midfielder, who stayed with the first team from 1989 to 1996 and in 1994 scored the club's 1,000th goal in the Paulista championship.

Home since 1996 is the Estádio Benedito Teixeira, the Teixeirão, a ground large enough that Santos borrowed it for their closing fixtures of the 2004 Brazilian championship. It holds 32,168 .
