«Locomotiva do ABC»
Local rules say the derby against Mauá Futebol Clube only became official on 11 May 2018. By 2024 the two clubs had met eleven times, and Mauaense trailed on paper — five draws, three defeats, two wins.
Grêmio Esportivo Mauaense grew out of Mauá, a town built around the railway that once carried workers through the ABC industrial belt outside São Paulo, and the nickname stuck for that reason: Locomotiva do ABC, complete with a mascot to match.
The club's honours sit at the lower rungs of the São Paulo state pyramid, but each meant a step up. In 1985 Mauaense beat Mirassol to the Campeonato Paulista Terceira Divisão title, winning 3-0 at home and drawing away for the aggregate, and the promotion that followed pushed the club into the second tier. Nearly two decades later, in 2003, a Segunda Divisão title opened the door to the Série A3 the following season.
Reinaldo Rodrigues, known to supporters as Feijão, played for the club through the 1990s and later returned as its president, one of the few figures to have stood on both sides of the job.
The Estádio Municipal Pedro Benedetti, opened in December 1984, lists a capacity of 8,567.
