The club took shape at a meeting in the London Tavern on 15 December 1863, formally constituted the following February. Since 1877 it has held tenancy at Lord's, in St John's Wood, a ground built to hold around 31,100 spectators. Middlesex plays under different colours depending on the format: white for the County Championship, blue in the One-Day Cup, pink and blue in T20, the last a nod to a breast cancer charity rather than tradition.
No season at the club has matched 1947, when Denis Compton scored 3,816 runs and Bill Edrich 3,539 in the same summer. Patsy Hendren stands above both across a longer career, having scored 40,302 runs for the county, the most by any Middlesex batsman. Mike Brearley captained the side from 1971 to 1982 before going on to lead England, and under Mike Gatting, captain from 1983 to 1997 and scorer of 28,411 runs for the club, Middlesex again won titles through the 1980s and into the 1990s.
The County Championship has been won eleven times outright, most recently in 2016, with two further shared titles in 1949 and 1977.
