Lancashire

James Anderson bowled at Old Trafford, and it says something about Lancashire that the club could produce him and, generations earlier, Brian Statham, without ever quite fitting either into a single sentence of the story. The ground has taken internationals as well as County Championship games since well before either man was born, its capacity stretched from 19,000 up toward 26,000 when England come to town.

The club took shape on 12 January 1864, at a meeting in the Queen's Hotel, and the Red Rose on the badge points back further still, to the Lancaster side of the Wars of the Roses that gives the Yorkshire fixture its name: the Roses Match, still the one on the calendar Lancashire supporters circle first.

Archie MacLaren gave the club its most outsized entry in the record books, 424 against Somerset in 1895. The County Championship itself has come to Old Trafford eight times outright, spread from 1897 to 1930, with a ninth added in 2011 after a long wait supporters had stopped expecting to end. One-day cricket has been kinder still: seven FP Trophy wins, more than any other county has managed in that competition.

Andrew Flintoff and Michael Atherton carried the club's name into England sides for years, and the academy has kept the pipeline running since, with Tom Hartley among the recent graduates to move from Old Trafford nets into a Test shirt.

Seven FP Trophies is the one figure no other county can match.
