Jos Buttler grew up in Taunton and came through the Somerset academy before England ever called on him.
Somerset were formally recognised as a first-class county in 1895, after buying the freehold of their Taunton ground the following year for £2,000. What they have never done, across all that time, is win the County Championship itself — the closest they have come is six runners-up finishes. The white-ball game has been kinder: four One-Day Cup titles stretching from 1979 to 2019, three T20 Blast wins including the most recent in 2025, and a pair of Benson & Hedges Cups in the early 1980s.
The County Ground itself was rebuilt through 2008 to 2011, with a new stand named for Trescothick added among the work on the pavilions.
