Essex

Alastair Cook made his debut for Essex in 2003 and spent two decades there, becoming, by the time he retired, England's all-time leading Test run-scorer. The record belongs to the country, not the county, but the county gave him twenty years of first-class cricket in which to build it.

Graham Gooch, who batted for the club from 1972 to 1997, carried it through a run of titles in the 1980s and early 1990s that no other side in the country matched at the time: the County Championship in 1979, 1983, 1984, 1986, 1991 and 1992, alongside one-day silverware in the same years. The club had waited nearly a century for that period — it was founded on 14 January 1876 at a meeting in the Shire Hall in Chelmsford, and did not reach first-class status until 1894, when it played Leicestershire at Leyton.

The badge carries three swords and an eagle, the latter borrowed from the Essex Regiment, whose own emblem recalled a Napoleonic eagle captured at the Battle of Salamanca. Since 1999 the limited-overs side has played under that image as the Essex Eagles, in blue rather than the yellow the county once wore.

More recent honours have come in a different era: the T20 Blast in 2019, led by the off-spinner Simon Harmer, and the County Championship title the same year, followed by the Bob Willis Trophy in 2020.

Middlesex is the fixture Essex media call its nearest rivalry, a matter of geography rather than any named derby. The link with Hertfordshire runs deeper, back to 1732, when the two played as a combined side.

What Essex has not managed is a County Championship title since 2019, despite the eagle on the badge and the two names, Gooch's and Cook's, that any other county in England would envy.
