Boston Breakers were a professional club when New England Mutiny beat them 2-1 in 2012, the first time an amateur side had done that in the history of American women's football.

The club began in 1999 as Springfield Sirens, based in Massachusetts, and lost the W-League final in its first season before winning the title outright in 2000. Ireland internationals Sylvia Gee, Sonya Maher, Geraldine O'Shea and Margaret Saurin wore the shirt in those early years. A 2002 rename to New England Mutiny came with a move to Ludlow, where the team has played home matches since at Lusitano Stadium, a 3,000-capacity ground, in a kit of azure blue, neon green and cranberry.

In the WPSL, Eastern Conference titles followed six times between 2003 and 2013, and the Northeast Division three times in the same run. The national final was a different matter, lost in 2004 and again in 2007. That same 2004 campaign brought a friendly against the full Chinese national team in which the Mutiny led 3-1 before conceding three times in the closing minutes to lose 4-3.

New England Mutiny were founding members of the UWS in 2016. Both of the club's most recent seasons there, 2024 and 2025, went unbeaten through the regular schedule, and both ended in defeat in the playoff final. Ellie Jean has since moved on to the NWSL with Racing Louisville, while Avery Klingensmith has played for the United States at youth level.

New England Mutiny returned in 2026 to the USL W League, the competition Springfield Sirens had first entered in 1999, facing Hartford Athletic, Vermont Green, AC Connecticut Women and Hudson Valley Crusaders.
