Forest bought its first kit in Garibaldi red in 1865, a nod to Giuseppe Garibaldi's volunteers, and the colour has stayed on the shirt since — red shirts, white shorts, red socks. Notts County, formed three years earlier, remains the oldest professional football club in the world. Fixtures between the two are still called the Trentside derby, though the sides have rarely shared a division in recent decades.

Forest have won the English title once, in 1977-78. The fixture between Forest and Derby still carries his name, the Brian Clough derby. The League Cup followed four times in all — 1978, 1979, 1989 and 1990 — and the FA Cup twice, sixty-one years apart, in 1898 and 1959.
