Rio Ave sits close enough down the road in Vila do Conde, same district of Porto.

Paços de Ferreira did not start under that name. In April 1950 the club was registered as Futebol Clube Vasco da Gama, and its first match came that November, a 2-1 win over Lousada. The statutes forced a rename in the early 1960s, and for a stretch after that the shirt was blue and white, borrowed from Porto. That copy did not last. On 15 March 1981 the club switched to yellow and green, the colours of the municipality itself, and has worn them since.

Getting out of the second tier has been the recurring work of the club's history. The one season that broke the pattern came in 2012/13, when a third-place finish in the Primeira Liga sent Paços into Champions League qualifying.

That campaign belonged to Paulo Fonseca, who built it and then carried the run into Europe. Before him, José Mota had already taken the club into its first continental football, the 2007/08 Europa League, and to a Taça de Portugal final the following season. Fonseca's spell is the one still cited at Estádio Capital do Móvel, the ground rebuilt in 1973 and expanded to 9,076 seats after a new north stand went up in 2017.
