The fixture between Pontevedra and Vigo is known as the Derbi pontevedrés. Celta Vigo remain the club's principal rivals, with SD Compostela and Racing Ferrol the other names that shape Galician football's internal geography.
The club came out of a merger of two local sides, Eiriña CF and Alfonso XIII CF, with Fernando Ponte Conde as its first president.
The high point came under Marcel Domingo, who took Pontevedra up to La Liga. Nené scored 35 goals in the top flight. In 1964/65 the side reached the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey.
What followed was a longer story of descent and repair. Economic trouble and results on the pitch combined in 2010/11 to drop the club into the Tercera División.
Estadio Municipal de Pasarón holds 10,500.
Pontevedra have won the Tercera División eight times — the first in 1946/47, the most recent in 2014/15.
