Muhammad Tanveer has scored more runs in T20 internationals for Qatar than anyone else, 1,980 in a career built largely at West End Park International Cricket Stadium in Doha, where the Qatar Cricket Association has run its home fixtures since the ground opened for cricket in 2013. The team he plays for traces back further than that venue: cricket in the country dates to 1977, played first at Khalifa Stadium, and the association that now oversees it was formed three years later, in 1980.

Recognition from the sport's governing body came in stages. The International Cricket Council took Qatar on as an Affiliate Member in 1999 and did not move the association up to Associate status until 2017, the same year the side finished third in the ICC World Cricket League Division Five and earned promotion to the Challenge League. That result followed a stretch of decline in the mid-2000s, when Qatar had slipped to eighth and then ninth place in successive tournaments after an earlier high of fourth in the 2004 ACC Trophy.

When the ICC extended T20I status to all its members in 2019, Qatar took the field in the format for the first time and beat Saudi Arabia by four wickets. The team reached a best-ever T20I ranking of 21st that May.

The United Arab Emirates remains the fixture that matters most, contested in the ACC Men's Premier Cup and the Gulf T20I Championship, with Bahrain and Kuwait supplying the other regular regional tests. Qatar plays in maroon and white, the colours of the national flag, and go by "The Maroons."
