Trieste Pallacanestro

Trieste's basketball is older than the club that carries the name today. The city's gymnastics society, Società Ginnastica Triestina, ran a basketball section that won five Italian championships between 1930 and 1941, and everything since has been built on that inheritance. When the original club dissolved, Pallacanestro Trieste was set up in 1975 and took over its sporting rights.

The chain broke again in 2004, when the club went bankrupt. It was refounded as Pallacanestro Trieste 2004 and started over in Serie B2. In 2018 the side won the Serie A2 playoffs and returned to the top flight, Lega Basket Serie A.

The stretch between those two dates is remembered for one man. Bogdan Tanjević coached the club from 1986 to 1994 and finished by taking it to the final of the FIBA Korać Cup.

The modern side has its own local story in Stefano Tonut, who came through the academy and was named Lega Basket Serie A most valuable player in 2021.

That place was lost in 2023, when the club went down. It did not stay down. Under Jamion Christian, who took charge that year, Trieste won the Serie A2 Gold playoffs in 2024 and went straight back up. Christian stayed until 2025. In the 2025–26 season the club plays in the Basketball Champions League.
