Vita Club

Pointe-Noire is Congo's port city, its economy built on oil and shipping rather than the political weight of Brazzaville, and for decades football there has meant Vita Club Mokanda. The club took its current name from an earlier one, Victoria Club Mokanda, and has carried green and white since.

Founded in 1952, Vita Club built its reputation in the 1970s, winning the Coupe du Congo in 1974 and again in 1977, then taking the national championship in 1971. That title came the same year the club made its only appearance in the CAF Champions League, a brief continental run without further advance.

The club's fullest period arrived at the end of the 1990s, when it won back-to-back league titles in 1998 and 1999, either side of a Coupe du Congo double in 1996 and 1997. Four cup wins and three league titles across two spells, separated by more than two decades, mark out a club that has never sustained dominance for long but has twice found the form to seize it.

Vita Club plays its home matches away from its own city, at the Stade Alphonse Massamba-Débat in Brazzaville, a ground built to hold roughly 33,000 and used for the national team's own qualifying fixtures. For a club rooted in Pointe-Noire, competing on a pitch two cities away is simply the arrangement football in the Congo has settled into.

Continental football has not returned since that single Champions League appearance in 1971, and the more recent honours have not been followed by others of the same weight. The club continues in Ligue 1 and the CAF Confederation Cup, chasing a title that last came more than twenty-five years ago.
