«The Ravens»
Lubumbashi still measures its football against a European yardstick TP Mazembe set for good in 2010, when the club reached the final of the FIFA Club World Cup after winning the CAF Champions League the year before. The run remains the reference point whenever the club's current form comes up for discussion.
The eleven continental trophies that followed make Mazembe the most decorated club on the continent, but the shape of that record tells its own story. The Champions League itself came in two distinct waves — 1967 and 1968 under the club's first generation, then a second era in 2009, 2010 and 2015 that rebuilt the club's name well beyond Katanga. The CAF Confederation Cup, won in back-to-back years in 2016 and 2017, and the CAF Super Cup, collected three times, filled out a decade in which Mazembe rarely went a season without a continental final to play.
None of that history softens the Derby Lushois. Saint-Éloi Lupopo, the other club of Lubumbashi, have met Mazembe well over 185 times, and the fixture carries a weight in the city that no continental run replaces. Stade TP Mazembe, built for the club in the Kamalondo district and opened in 2011, gave Mazembe a home to match its ambitions after decades of playing elsewhere in the city.
What the club has not managed is a Club World Cup title. The Champions League silverware has also dried up since 2015, leaving Mazembe to defend a legacy built largely in the previous decade rather than add fresh continental honours to it.
