It was built as a public facility, managed by the local government and the Regional Administration of Planaltina. The highest recorded attendance was approximately 12,000 spectators during a charity match on December 25, 1982, which featured the final professional appearance of the legendary Brazilian footballer Mané Garrincha. Garrincha, playing for the amateur team Londrina against the AGAP selection, played for 60 minutes in a 1–0 victory for AGAP; he passed away less than a month later. The stadium was later honored with a plaque commemorating this event.

The club founded in 1963 has no other home. The Estádio Adonir José Guimarães is the only ground in Planaltina.
