In Planaltina, in the Federal District, the club began in someone's home. On 30 May 1963, 33 sports enthusiasts met in the residence of Epaminondas Lopes Trindade and left with a football club. It turned professional in 1985. The nickname is Galo, the rooster, which is also the mascot, and the supporters call themselves Planaltinenses.

Lúcio passed through the youth teams between 1995 and 1997. He went on to win the World Cup with Brazil in 2002 and to play for Inter Milan and Bayern Munich. Sandro, later of Internacional and Tottenham Hotspur, and Jadson, who played for Botafogo and Udinese, came through the same system. So did Dimba, who was top scorer of the 2003 Brazilian Championship with Goiás.

The juniors have won the Campeonato Brasiliense de Juniores twice, in 1993 and 2020. The first came in the same year the senior side finished fourth in the Campeonato Brasiliense, a place it also took in 1991, 1995 and 1997. The title has never come, and fourth remains the best the first team has managed.

Locally, Ceilândia and Sobradinho are the opponents who make a fixture feel like a clássico, though neither rivalry has a name of its own.

The senior team spent a long time outside the top flight. It finished second in the Segunda Divisão in 2015. In 2023 it finished runners-up again, and this time that was enough: the result brought Planaltina back to the Primeira Divisão for 2024, after 25 years away. The home ground, the Estádio Adonir José Guimarães, holds 12,000.
