Every Planaltina match against Sobradinho Esporte Clube carries a name of its own, the "Jogo das Congregações," and it is that fixture, not any trophy, that defines Galo do Planalto's place in the football of the Federal District. The rivalry has outlasted most of what the club has actually won, which is nothing at senior level: four fourth-place finishes in the Campeonato Brasiliense Primeira Divisão, in 1991, 1993, 1995 and 1997, and a runner-up medal in the Segunda Divisão in 2023 are the closest Planaltina has come to a title.

What the club has produced instead is players. Lúcio came through Planaltina's academy before winning the World Cup with Brazil in 2002 and going on to captain the national side and play for Inter Milan and Bayern Munich. Renaldo left for Atlético Mineiro and finished as top scorer of the Brazilian Championship in 1996; a similar path took Dimba to Goiás, where he topped the scoring charts in 2003 before winning the Carioca championship with Botafogo. Sandro and Jadson also passed through before moving on to Internacional, Tottenham Hotspur, Botafogo and Udinese. None of them stayed to bring back the state title the club has never held.

Planaltina played professionally in the Campeonato Brasiliense from 1985 to 1998, then dropped out of official competition until returning in 2015. The club is often mixed up with Sociedade Esportiva Planaltina, a separate outfit founded in 2000 in Goiás and now based in Samambaia, which shares little beyond the name. Galo do Planalto, red and white, plays at the Estádio Adonir José Guimarães, which holds 6,000. It began on 30 May 1963, when 33 sports enthusiasts gathered at the home of Epaminondas Lopes Trindade and decided the city needed a club of its own.
