Skonto's own peculiarity is the gap between what it holds for football and what it has held for everything else: a ground fitted out for 6,747 seated spectators has pulled in crowds of roughly 32,000 for Aerosmith and 33,000 for Metallica, numbers that only make sense once the pitch and stands give way to a full concert-bowl layout. Depeche Mode, Elton John, Snoop Dogg, Massive Attack and Akon have all played here too, and in 2003 the venue hosted the Grand Dance Concert as part of the Latvian Song and Dance Festival.

The stadium was built on the initiative of Guntis Indriksons, then president of the Latvian Football Federation, funded jointly by the federation and its sponsors, and it has never carried another name since opening. Its address places it in central Riga, on E. Melngaiļa iela. The natural turf was reworked in October 2023 into a hybrid system, GreenFields XtraGrass, which stitches synthetic fibres into the grass to hold the surface together through a heavier fixture load.

Tenancy here has moved in a loop rather than a straight line. Skonto FC played its home matches at the stadium from 2000 to 2016, then Riga FC took over as principal tenant, and Skonto itself returned in 2022. The Latvia national team has used the ground as its home venue since 2000, with a gap between 2018 and 2022, and in 2009 Ventspils also staged its Europa League fixtures there. The record attendance for a football match, put at somewhere between 9,000 and 10,000 spectators, dates to 15 November 2003, when Latvia held off Turkey in a Euro 2004 play-off tie.
