Gornik Zabrze and Ferencvaros shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw at the Ernest Pol Stadium on Wednesday evening. The result came in the third qualifying round of the Europa League, with both sides now level after Ferencvaros had taken a narrow 1-0 victory in the first leg just eight days earlier. Kamil Urbanski gave the hosts the lead from the spot before the break, while Milan Sacek turned the ball into his own net in the 82nd minute to ensure the points were split.
Urbanski's penalty arrived at the half-hour mark, following a foul that sent the referee to his spot. It was a crucial moment — Gornik had dominated possession at 58 per cent and created more chances, but Ferencvaros were not without bite. The visitors had their own threats, though their expected goals figure of 0.77 tells you they struggled to test the goalkeeper as much as they might have liked.
By then the game had settled into something neither side was entirely comfortable with. Gornik recorded 121 attacks compared to 93 for Ferencvaros, but only converted five shots on target into a single goal. And here's the thing — they also had 0.26 shot accuracy, meaning four of those five shots on target missed the target. The substitutions came thick and fast in the second half. Gornik brought on Grzegorz Kanichowsky for Peter Rommens at 59 minutes, then added Dele at 72 and Pedro Bernardo alongside Peter Federico at 79. Ferencvaros responded with Endre Janza and Matej Khlan at 89, followed by Cadu and Luke Joseph in stoppage time. Both managers were looking for a winner, though the pitch conditions and fatigue were starting to tell.
To be fair, the statistics suggest Gornik should have won this. They created two big chances and registered 1.95 expected goals, while Ferencvaros managed none. The visitors had 35 clearances compared to 23 for the hosts, which tells you they were under more pressure. But football doesn't always reward the better side, especially in European qualifiers where nerves play a bigger role than expected goals.
The draw means neither team can claim superiority yet. Gornik now need to avoid defeat away from home, while Ferencvaros will be pleased to have returned to Poland with something. The aggregate score is level, and the second leg will decide everything. By then, the pressure will shift entirely to whichever side has to chase the game.
