Match report

Manchester United hosted Manchester City in the Premier League's fourth round of matches on Saturday, and the visitors claimed a narrow 1-0 victory despite playing with ten men for most of the game. Erling Haaland's goal in the sixtieth minute, confirmed by VAR, proved sufficient to separate the neighbours.

The match turned early when Phil Foden received a red card in the twenty-third minute, meaning City had to adapt their approach from the opening quarter. By then the visitors had already shown they were prepared to sit deep and counter rather than dominate possession outright.

United pressed forward with more urgency after the dismissal, but their shots lacked precision. Nine attempts flew off target while only three found the true path to goal. The hosts created more chances on paper, yet Haaland's finish from one of City's two shots on target was all that separated the sides.

And here's the thing about this result — we had called City victory in our preview with 43 per cent confidence, and the outcome followed that reading. The visitors did not need much to win, relying on structure and a moment of quality rather than territorial dominance.

To be fair, City's defensive organisation was notable. Twenty-five clearances and three saves from Gianluigi Donnarumma showed how United's pressure eventually lost its shape. The home side's possession figure of 55 per cent tells only half the story when so many of those passes ended in dead ends.

Substitutions came thick and fast in the second half, with Rayan Cherki and Youri Tielemans among those brought on. Enzo Fernández and Marcus Rashford both saw their replacements before the final whistle. The yellow cards continued to accumulate, with Josko Gvardiol, Enzo Fernández and Harry Maguire all receiving cautions.

The result keeps City's perfect record intact at four wins from four, placing them second on twelve points. United remain in thirteenth with four points after one victory, one draw and two defeats. The gap between the sides in the table has widened, though this was never a fixture where statistics alone tell the full picture.
