Annagh United

Portadown has room for two senior football clubs, and Annagh United has lived much of its history in the shadow of the bigger one — Portadown FC, whose meetings with Annagh still draw the sharpest attention the club gets at home. Annagh United was founded in 1963 and has spent the decades since shuttling between Northern Ireland's middle tiers, never quite settling into the top flight.

The club joined Irish League Division Two in 2004, dropped back to the Intermediate League in 2009/10, returned in 2014/15, and fell again in 2016/17. That same season produced a result still remembered by supporters: a 3-2 win over Glentoran, one of Irish football's most decorated names, in the League Cup. Annagh won the Premier Intermediate League title in 2019/20 and climbed back into the Championship, only to lose the promotion play-off four years running, undone in turn by Portadown, Dungannon Swifts, Carrick Rangers and Crusaders.

The ground, on Tandragee Road and now known as BMG Arena, opened in 1983, and George Best turned out for an Annagh United side in the friendly that marked the occasion. Home matches are still played in red.

It took the 2025/26 Mid-Ulster Cup to give Annagh United its first major trophy — 63 years after the club was founded.
