The Copa Asobal was a Spanish handball cup competition founded in 1990 by ASOBAL (Asociación de Clubes de Balonmano de España). It operated under the auspices of the Royal Spanish Handball Federation (RFEBM) as a secondary national cup. The tournament featured a Final Four format. Historically, the four participating teams were the top three clubs from the Liga ASOBAL standings at the midpoint of the season and the host club. This structure remained consistent in its final iterations.
FC Barcelona is the most successful club in the competition's history, having won 18 titles between 1994–95 and 2022–23. Other notable winners include BM Ciudad Real with six titles, Teka Santander with four, and Ademar León with two. Single titles were claimed by BM Valladolid, BM Granollers, and Bidasoa Irún. The last edition of the Copa Asobal was won by FC Barcelona in 2023.
The competition was discontinued after the 2022–2023 season due to organizational conflicts and financial issues. It was replaced by the Copa de España starting in the 2023–24 season. The Copa de España is organized by the RFEBM. The Copa Asobal was strictly for top-tier clubs. It was notable for its brevity and high intensity, often held in December. This contrasted with the longer, more inclusive nature of the Copa del Rey, which is an open knockout tournament involving teams from both the first division and the second division. The Copa Asobal's design ensured that only elite participants competed for the prize. Barcelona's dominance in this specific format highlights their historical strength in Spanish handball. The competition served as a distinct entity within the national cup system before its cessation.
FC Barcelona secured 18 victories in the tournament. The event ran from 1990 until 2023.
