NK Varaždin and Osijek played out a goalless draw in the Croatian First League on Saturday at Stadion Varteks. The result leaves both sides within one point of each other in the table, which feels like the right outcome for a match where chances were thin on the ground. We had backed the home side to win, but the game refused to go that way.
And here's the thing about the first half — it was all about structure, not spectacle. J. Kruiver picked up a booking in the 11th minute, then G. Sikosek and M. Heister followed in quick succession before the break. By then, Osijek had a goal disallowed after VAR review for J. Jezic in the 42nd minute, a moment that could have shifted everything. Instead, both teams went into the interval with the same number of points.
To be fair, the second half brought more movement but little penetration. Varaždin made three changes at the break, bringing on L. Jelenic, A. Latkovic and G. Sikosek. Osijek responded with L. Tunjic and A. Ljatifi, then added S. Juric and I. Tavares while N. Farkas added to his yellow card tally. I. Jezic came on for his side in the 68th minute, and M. Mladenovski finished the changes in the 84th. The substitutions felt reactive rather than transformative.
The numbers tell a familiar story. Both teams registered just two shots on target, with accuracy figures of 15 per cent and 18 per cent respectively. Varaždin had 103 attacks against Osijek's 107, and possession split 47-53. Big chances created: two for the hosts, none for the visitors. Many shots with no goals means chances went begging, and that is exactly what happened here.
Varaždin sit third with 15 points after eight games, while Osijek remain second on 16 points. A single point separates them, and neither side has much room to breathe. The draw extends Varaždin's unbeaten run and halts Osijek's momentum after that heavy 4-2 defeat to Dinamo Zagreb earlier in the week.
What stood out was the discipline. Four yellow cards between them, but no reds, no breakdowns. This was a match decided by three or four moments rather than sustained pressure. The VAR call for Jezic was the closest either side came to taking the lead, and by then it was too late for either side to recover.
