Kobżyce II Turn Home Fortunes at Piotrowice-Wielkie
Piotrowice-Wielkie Women hosted Kobżyce II in the I Liga on Sunday and lost 25:26. The visitors, sitting bottom of the table, finally broke their draw streak. To be fair, they hadn't lost all season, but they hadn't won either. This was different.
And here's the thing about twenty minutes in — I was watching the home side's defensive shape then, and it looked comfortable. They'd drawn twice already, won once, and expected to add another point at home. Kobżyce had three draws and nothing else. The scoreboard eventually told a different story, but the flow at that stage suggested a routine home victory.
The match turned when Kobżyce stopped playing not to keep shape and started playing to win. They'd been content with draws — 27:28 away to Zagłębie, 26:37 at Ruch, 24:33 against Góra — but something shifted. By then they were trailing, and trailing changed their approach. The final score, 25:26, was one goal wider than their recent results suggested they'd achieve.
The home side had beaten Zakrze 24:20 three weeks ago and lost narrowly to Żeleń Góra 22:23. They'd drawn with Świebodzice 23:32 last time out. All those results pointed toward another point, not a loss. Kobżyce had conceded 28, 37 and 33 goals in their previous three matches and still managed to keep this tighter. That's worth noting.
We'd given a home win at 72 per cent confidence. The prediction didn't materialise, and it's not worth pretending the match was unpredictable from the start. What changed was Kobżyce's willingness to take risks when they needed to. They'd been frozen out of winning for three rounds, and Sunday finally gave them the chance to stop being polite.
After this result, Kobżyce move off zero points and into the lower half with something to show for their first three matches. Piotrowice-Wielkie remain seventh but drop to three points from three games. The gap between them and the teams above hasn't changed, but the feeling inside the stadium on Sunday evening will have.
