Gonzalo Montiel

Gonzalo Montiel came through the River Plate academy and made his senior debut in 2016, going on to win the Copa Libertadores, the Recopa Sudamericana and the Argentine Primera División before Sevilla signed him for €15 million in August 2021. At Sevilla he added a UEFA Europa League title, and it was Montiel himself who scored the winning penalty in the 2023 final against Roma. A loan spell at Nottingham Forest followed in 2023–24, with the English club opting against making the move permanent, and in January 2025 he returned to River Plate on a permanent transfer.

In the 2022 World Cup final against France, with the match locked at 3-3 after extra time, Montiel stepped up and converted the decisive penalty in the shootout to hand Argentina the title. It capped a run with the national side that also included the 2021 and 2024 Copa América triumphs, built on a debut for the senior team back in March 2019 against Venezuela.

His club career has carried its own recognition too: he was named Best Defender of Argentine Football in 2020 and was picked for the Ideal Team of the Copa Libertadores and the Ideal Team of the Americas that same year.
