Club Universitario

These days Universitario de Sucre compete outside the Bolivian top flight. The club began as a students' side, put together by physical education teacher Alfredo Sandi Navarro in 1961 with backing from Óscar Frerking Salas, rector of the local university, and for a while people simply called it "Medicina" after the medical students who filled the squad. The current name arrived only in 1969.

Promotion in 2005, through the Copa Simón Bolívar, put them back among Bolivia's elite for 2006, and three years later they had their first national title, the 2008 Torneo Apertura. José Luis Chávez is remembered as the face of that campaign, while the title opened the door to the 2009 Copa Libertadores group stage. A second championship followed in 2014, the Torneo Clausura, with Gastón Mealla scoring the goals that mattered most, and that run carried the club into the 2015 Libertadores.
