Debreceni EAC

Medical students at Debrecen founded D-Medikus SE in 2005. The team they built folded into Debreceni Egyetemi Atlétikai Club, an institution that traces back to 1919 and had already changed its name half a dozen times before the handball players arrived — Debreceni MEFESZ, Debreceni Haladás, Debreceni Universitas, KLTE-DSK, and back to DEAC in 1991.

Growth came in steps measured in county titles before it came in anything bigger. Debreceni EAC won the county championship in 2005–06 and again in 2007–08. The breakthrough arrived in 2016–17, when the club earned promotion to NB I/B, the second tier of Hungarian handball, where it has stayed since.

The club plays in black and white, though Hungarian media often call the team kék-fehérek — the blue-whites — a nickname that sits oddly against the official colours and likely carries over from the university's basketball section. István Rédei gave the club its clearest link to the national team, having played for Hungary at the 2010 European Championship, and Sándor Bohács made his own senior international debut in 2018 after coming through at Debrecen. Ákos Pethő has stayed on past his playing days, working now as assistant coach.

Matches against OTP Bank-Pick Szeged carry the weight of a regional derby in NB I/B, though the rivalry has never picked up a name of its own. What Debreceni EAC has not done is win a national trophy: no Hungarian Cup, no NB I championship, and no season yet in the country's top division.
