Jurmala Ii

Nobody at ASK Sporta zāle expects fireworks when Jurmala II take the court in Group B of the SynotTip Virslīga — the reserve side exists to feed players up, not to chase silverware, and the record book has nothing entered against its name.

The club it draws on, HK Jūrmala, was registered in 2003 as the non-profit Jūrmala ACTIVE and has never played anywhere but Rīga: its home floor sits inside the Latvian Academy of Sport Education building on Krustabaznīcas iela, a hall that seats 500 and belongs to the academy rather than to the club itself. The senior team trains and plays there too, which makes the ground less a stadium than a shared classroom.

Group B pairs the reserves with sides such as HK S&A, Salaspils SS, ONSC/HK Ogre and SK Latgols, and the Ogre fixture carries weight beyond the scoreline — the rivalry between HK Jūrmala and HK Ogre runs deep enough at first-team level that it colours the second string's meetings as well, even when neither has anything at stake beyond league points.

For now Jurmala II sit where a development team is supposed to sit: in blue and white, in the lower reaches of Latvian handball's structure, with the season's task simply to keep working through Group B.
