Kostroma had three Spartak sides before the one that stuck.

The Khotimsky brothers, who own Sovcombank, put money behind a rebuild in 2022 and a professional squad was assembled again under the old name. Three seasons later the red-and-whites won the Second League's A division in 2024/25 and went up to the First League — the first promotion of the new era, and the first title since the 1980 second-tier win in the Western zone.

Home is Urozhai, which is not in Kostroma at all. The ground sits in Karavayevo, a settlement in the surrounding district, at Akademgorodok 37, and carries the fuller name of the Golubev sports school. It seats 3,164.

Before all of that there were cup runs worth remembering in their own small way: the quarter-final of the RSFSR zone in the 1962 Soviet Cup, a semi-final in the neighbouring zone the year after. In the Russian Cup the club reached the last eight in 2005.
