Stahlavy

Šťáhlavští are currently in the Czech 1. liga mužů, the second tier of men's handball, with a run through the Czech Cup alongside it each season. The club runs on the kind of calendar a small-town side keeps: alongside the league fixtures, Šťáhlavy hosts the Milan Brabenec and Ivan Moravec memorial tournaments every year, matches that draw former players and neighbours back to the hall as much as they draw a scoreline.

That hall, the Sportovní hala in Šťáhlavy, does not fill to any great number — a league match in May 2025 was watched by 208 people — but it has stayed the club's home through decades in which the honours have come rarely and locally. The one league title on record dates to 1941, when the club topped the West Bohemian regional championship in the old six-a-side variant of the game, long before the sport took the shape it plays now. Since then, the closer measure of the club's standing has been tournaments like the Memoriál Zdeňka Vojíře, which Šťáhlavy won in 2018.

The club was entered into the Czech statistical register on 22 March 1991, the date that marks it as a legal entity, though handball in Šťáhlavy reaches back well beyond that piece of paperwork. There is a record of the team playing Ferencváros of Budapest in 1957, an international fixture that says more about the depth of the local game than any founding certificate does — a village side taking the floor against a club from Hungary at a time when such matches were not handed out lightly. It is that older thread, not the 1991 registration, that the current Šťáhlavští side traces itself back to.
