In Winterthur, a Swiss championship rarely stays in one dressing room. Since 2016, a run of players carrying the yellow and black through the youth ranks of Pfadi Winterthur has kept surfacing in the first team's title celebrations, and the reserve side built to feed that pipeline has a name that reads almost like an apology for existing: SG Yellow/Pfadi Espoirs.

The arrangement dates to 2015, when Yellow Winterthur and Pfadi Winterthur pooled their senior squads into a joint venture called SG Yellow/Pfadi. A year later, the partnership split into two tiers: a first team chasing Swiss Championship and Swiss Cup silverware, and this second team, the Espoirs, sent down to the Nationalliga B to develop players rather than collect trophies. The rule that comes with that role is blunt: as a reserve side, the Espoirs cannot enter the Swiss Cup or contend for the top-flight title, whatever the parent club does with them later. Daniel Parkhomenko, Tiago Cuencas, and the Lioi brothers, Leandro and Alessio, all passed through this level before their names meant anything in the top division.

What they were feeding into was a side that, in the years right after the 2016 split, won the Swiss Championship in 2016 and 2017 and then made the Swiss Cup something close to a annual fixture, lifting it eight times between 2016 and 2024. None of that belongs to the Espoirs on paper. It belongs to the team they hope to join, most pointedly when that team faces Kadetten Schaffhausen in what both clubs' supporters call the Swiss Derby.

The Espoirs still play out of the same city, at the AXA Arena, a 2,000-seat hall in Winterthur that has carried a different sponsor's name over the years but the same purpose underneath it: a proving ground for a club whose senior team was built by looking, year after year, at exactly the players coming up through this one.
