Maribor and Mura played out a 1-1 draw in the 1. SNL regular season on Sunday at Ljudski Vrt. The hosts took an early lead but could not hold on for all three points at home. By then the match had already shown its character, with moments that mattered far more than possession figures.
I. Tshipamba put Maribor ahead in the second minute, a quick strike that settled the crowd. To be fair, it was the kind of opening that sets the tone for the afternoon. Mura responded with work but could not find an equaliser before the break.
N. Kasalo levelled things for the visitors in the 44th minute, just before half-time. And here's the thing — that goal changed the momentum entirely. Maribor had looked comfortable, but suddenly the match was wide open again.
The turning point came in the 55th minute when A. Zalaznik was shown a red card for Mura. They were reduced to ten men, which should have given the hosts everything they needed. Instead, Maribor found a way through only once more, and the match slipped away from them.
The statistics tell a familiar story. Maribor dominated with 64 per cent possession and 96 attacks, yet only managed four shots on target. Mura, with just 36 per cent of the ball, registered three shots on target from 61 attacks. Many shots with one goal means chances went begging on both sides.
We had backed a home win at 63 per cent confidence, but the match went differently. The red card did not help — or perhaps it helped too much, making Maribor play cautiously when they should have pushed. The table goes out of the window in these games.
Maribor remain top of the 1. SNL with 16 points from eight games, four wins and four draws. Mura sit ninth with eight points, two wins and two draws. The result keeps both sides on their current trajectories, nothing more.
