Uminsk kept Smorgon at bay with a 2:0 win in the First League's Regular Season round 18 on Wednesday. The home side took all three points at their own ground, moving them clear of the visitors in the table.
V. Popov opened the scoring in the 21st minute and never looked back. He struck again after the break to complete his brace, and that was enough to settle the contest.
By then the game had settled into a rhythm, and both managers made changes at the interval. E. Mychelkin and I. Vorobyov came on together for Uminsk in the 46th minute, an attempt to shift the tempo.
The second goal arrived in the 61st minute, and Popov's name was on both scoresheets. Smorgon did not travel to make up the numbers, and the home side held their nerve when it mattered.
Discipline was tight enough to keep things measured. Three yellow cards were shown in the second half — two for the hosts and one for the visitors — but nothing escalated beyond that.
Statistically the match was not a free-for-all. Uminsk took two corners to Smorgon's three, and neither side had a red card to account for. The clean-sheet run came to an end for Smorgon, but the result was never in serious doubt after the first goal.
The win moves Uminsk to 25 points from 23 games, one ahead of Smorgon who sit on 24. Both sides have played the same number of matches, and the gap is now a single point with plenty of season left.
