Darren Dietz: food in Canada didn't impress me
The Sibir defenceman took his children to Canada for the first time this year and says restaurant menus there felt bland and repetitive compared to home.
Darren Dietz, the Sibir defenceman, has never warmed to Canadian food, and a first family trip back this year only confirmed it.
The 33-year-old Canadian, who has played in the KHL since 2017 and holds Kazakhstani citizenship through his wife, took his children to Canada for three weeks this year, their first visit to Canada. Despite the language barrier, the trip went better than expected.
He had hardly been back in a decade. "Basically I hadn't been there for 10 years, I'd only come a couple of times. The purpose of the trip was to spend time with the family. We just stayed quietly at my parents' place," he said.
By the end of the trip, he was already missing home.
Asked what he disliked most, he pointed to the sameness of restaurant menus.
