Kvartalnov backs referees after Lokomotiv win at CSKA
Lokomotiv's coach declined to question the disallowed CSKA goal in a 3:2 win, citing second-period penalty trouble and no return date yet for Maxim Berezkin.
Dmitri Kvartalnov did not argue with the officials after Lokomotiv's 3:2 win at CSKA on Sunday. Asked about the disallowed CSKA goal, the head coach said the decision belonged to the referees and left it at that.
The disallowed goal came at a turning point. Lokomotiv scored themselves almost immediately after the review, turning the passage of play in their favour.
Kvartalnov also addressed a stretch of penalties in the second period, which he said cost his side time in the attacking zone before Lokomotiv settled and, in his view, played a solid third period. He put the penalty trouble down to CSKA's pressure on home ice, with the crowd driving the hosts forward.
On Maxim Berezkin, the coach said the forward was left out of the travelling squad and gave no timeline for his return, adding only that Lokomotiv are playing without him for now.
The win at CSKA follows a mixed opening to the season for Gordon's side: a 5:1 rout of Traktor built around 18-year-old Matvey Kotkov's opening goal, then a 0:1 derby defeat to Dinamo in which officials later confirmed Ivan Abrosimov's penalty call had been correct. Beating CSKA away, with the goal review going Lokomotiv's way this time, snaps that pattern.
