Jack Hughes praises Cale Makar's record NHL deal
Devils forward Jack Hughes says Cale Makar's $20.4 million-a-year contract is a great sign for the NHL, despite salaries lagging other leagues.
Jack Hughes has weighed in on the wave of nine-figure contracts reshaping the NHL's pay scale, pointing to Cale Makar's new deal as a sign of where the league is heading.
The Colorado defenceman, 27, signed an extension in August worth 20.4 million dollars a season, making him the highest-paid player in the league once the deal kicks in a year from now.
"If you compare the NHL with other leagues, salaries here are obviously much lower — and there are plenty of reasons for that. But the fact that players are now getting 20 million dollars a year is a great sign for the league," Hughes said.
