The comments follow a summer of record deals for players well under 30. In July, 20-year-old Macklin Celebrini signed a five-year contract with the San Jose Sharks worth $18.8 million a season. On 29 August, 27-year-old Colorado Avalanche defenceman Cale Makar became the league's highest-paid player, agreeing to a deal worth $20.4 million a year that takes effect the following season.
Marner himself signed with Vegas on a contract running through the 2032/33 campaign, carrying a cap hit of $12 million.
