Lukas Watkowiak

Watkowiak came through Mainz's youth setup after starting out at FSV Frankfurt, but never made it onto the pitch for the Mainz first team. He left for SV Wehen Wiesbaden on a free transfer, where he settled in as the starting goalkeeper.

His contract in Wiesbaden was mutually terminated in August 2020, and he signed for FC St. Gallen on a free transfer. The 2025–26 season brought the biggest moment of his career there: St. Gallen won the Swiss Cup, beating Stade Lausanne-Ouchy 3–0 in the final at the Wankdorf in Bern. Watkowiak started the match, though his part in it ended early — he was sent off just before half-time, but did not concede either.

Despite progressing through Mainz's age-group teams, he was never called up at international level for Germany. Every senior move of his career, from Mainz's reserves to Wehen Wiesbaden and on to St. Gallen, has come as a free transfer rather than for a fee.
