About the player
Sam Rooney scored his first senior goal for St Patrick's Athletic in August 2026, in an FAI Cup tie against Shamrock Rovers that sent the club through to the quarter-finals. The strike came from a forward who had come through the club's own academy and signed his first professional contract there in April 2025.
Rooney is the son of Wayne Rooney, though his own path has run through Irish football: he has represented the Republic of Ireland at youth level. A left-footed forward, he wears the number 35 shirt in the League of Ireland Premier Division.
His development has not gone unnoticed further afield. In September 2025, he took part in a trial with Nottingham Forest, though it did not lead to a move and he remained with St Patrick's Athletic.
