About the player
What put Kalmar FF's scouts on to Sodiq Lawal was a trophy won on the other side of the world. Captaining the Beyond Limits academy side, he lifted the Gothia Cup, the largest youth tournament in international football, beating ASEC Mimosas in the final, and added the TCC League and TCC Cup titles with the same group. He also got minutes with Beyond Limits' senior side in the Nigeria National League, the country's second tier, and played in the ValueJet Cup final against Shooting Stars.
Lawal's route into the game began at Future Bright Academy in Nigeria before he moved to Beyond Limits in Ikenne at the age of thirteen. It was there that he developed into a left-back and, eventually, the captain's armband followed. On 14 January 2026, Kalmar FF announced they had signed him on a four-year contract, and he took his first training session with the Swedish club that same day.
No fee was disclosed for the move. Lawal has not featured for any Nigerian youth national team, so his footballing story so far is essentially the one written at Beyond Limits: a title-laden academy career capped by the Gothia Cup win that carried him to Sweden.
