Atlético Madrid Women

Jennifer Hermoso left Atlético as a teenager, came back years later and left again, and she took the Pichichi in 2018-19 with 24 goals, in the same stretch of seasons that brought three league titles in a row. Silvia Meseguer stayed for the long haul, 225 appearances across nine years.

The current side is not the one that first wore the crest. That earlier team, Atlético Villa de Madrid, took the inaugural league title in 1989-90 under Jesús Gil, then lost its backing and broke apart around 1992, its players scattering to Oroquieta Villaverde. In 2001, Lola Romero and María Vargas built a new women's team from scratch after their previous club, Coslada, shut its own women's section down. Atlético did not fold this side into the main club until 2005.

What they built went on to beat Barcelona 3-2 in the 2015-16 Copa de la Reina final and to add three straight league titles through 2019. In March of that year, a Madrid derby against Barcelona drew 60,739 to the Metropolitano, a European record for a women's match.

Virginia Torrecilla's stretch at the club ran from 2013 to 2024. Real Madrid remain the fixture that matters most, the Madrid Derby, and a quarter-final run in the Champions League in 2019-20.
