Basel II

The team exists to give teenagers minutes. FC Basel keeps a second side in the Promotion League for the same reason most Swiss top-flight clubs do. There is no separate founding date to quote: the structure traces back to the parent club, formed on 15 November 1893.

What that arrangement costs is spelt out in the rules. Reserve sides in Switzerland cannot be promoted, whatever the table says, and they are barred from the Swiss Cup. Nothing followed from it. Third place came in 2016/17, fourth in 2017/18 and again in 2024/25.

Two names carry the argument for the whole exercise. Xherdan Shaqiri played 19 matches here between 2007 and 2009, scored eight, and went up to the first team. Manuel Akanji managed four appearances in 2015/16 before the same move.

Home is the Stadion Rankhof on Grenzacherstrasse, which holds 7,600, though only 1,000 of those are seats. Japanese beetles chewed through the turf badly enough that part of the 2024/25 home schedule was shifted out to the Nachwuchs-Campus in Münchenstein.

Ognjen Zarić lasted from the summer of 2022 to March 2023; Dennis Hediger arrived that May and was gone by 2024, replaced by Mario Cantaluppi.
