The Wolves carry Chicago's name but play in Rosemont, Illinois, in the Allstate Arena, which holds 16,692 for hockey. They have kept that name since 1994 and have never moved. The colours are burgundy, gold, black and white.

Their first two championships came in the International Hockey League (IHL): the Turner Cup in 1997–98 and again in 1999–2000. The Calder Cup of 2001–02 came in the American Hockey League (AHL), and it came in the same season the Atlanta Thrashers became their NHL parent club. That link lasted until 2011. The Vancouver Canucks followed for two seasons from 2011, then the St. Louis Blues from 2013 to 2020, then the Carolina Hurricanes. In 2023 the Wolves spent a season with no NHL partner. They re-signed with the Hurricanes in 2024 and are again Carolina's primary development team.

The best-known name to pass through is Chris Chelios, a Hockey Hall of Fame inductee, who played his final season with the Wolves in 2009–10. His son Jake later played in the NHL. Steve Maltais is remembered as a franchise legend.

Their rivals are the Milwaukee Admirals, and the fixture is known as the Amtrak Rivalry.

The Calder Cup of 2021–22 was the third, and it came 14 years after the one of 2007–08.
