Erwin J. Merar sold appliances. After the Milwaukee Wings finished their first season as an amateur side in 1970–71, he led a group of investors that bought the team, and he renamed it the Admirals after his own brand of refrigerators.

The Admirals began as an independent team, joined the United States Hockey League (USHL) in 1973 and won its title in 1976. The following year they moved to the International Hockey League (IHL), where they lost the 1983 Turner Cup final. When the IHL ceased operations in 2001, they entered the American Hockey League (AHL). Through all of it the franchise stayed in Milwaukee.

The pairing paid off in 2004, when the Admirals beat the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins to win the Calder Cup . The Grand Rapids Griffins, their main rivals since the IHL years, remain opponents in the AHL.

The club changed its colours in 2015, dropping black for navy and keeping the light blue that Milwaukee calls Lake Michigan blue. Central Division titles followed in 2016, 2017 and 2018, and again in 2024. They had also won the division in 2006.

Roman Josi, Filip Forsberg and Shea Weber all spent time in Milwaukee on the way to Nashville. So did goaltender Pekka Rinne.
