Rockford's IceHogs have met the Texas Stars twice when it counted, and lost both times. The Stars beat them in the Western Conference Finals in 2017-18 and again in 2018-19, the only two seasons in which the Hogs have got that far in the American Hockey League (AHL). Nine playoff appearances in the AHL era have brought no Calder Cup. The Chicago Wolves and the Grand Rapids Griffins are also named as rivals, but the Stars are the team that ended the two deepest runs.
The AHL side is a newcomer to the city, though the name is not. A United Hockey League (UHL) team called the IceHogs had played in Rockford since 1999, and in 2007 it won the Colonial Cup, beating the Kalamazoo Wings in a deciding Game 7. That spring, on 19 March, a different franchise was bought and moved to town. It had started life in 1995 as the Baltimore Bandits, become the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks in 1997, and spent 2006-07 as the Cincinnati RailRaiders. It took over both the IceHogs name and the arena, now the BMO Center, from the UHL club, which ceased operations. The new team began play in 2007-08 as the primary development affiliate of the Chicago Blackhawks.
The nickname comes from a local legend about wild boars roaming the frozen Rock River in hard winters. Supporters shorten it to "the 'Hogs", and the colours are red, black and white.
The figure most associated with the club is not a player. Hamilton E. Hog, the official mascot, is the face of the team in the stands at the BMO Center.
