Paul Willett's number 16 is retired in Bakersfield, one of five from the ECHL years. Steve Dowhy's 74 is another. Those numbers belong to a team that no longer exists. Bakersfield began as the Fog in the West Coast Hockey League in 1995, became the Condors in 1998 and joined the ECHL in 2003. It won the Pacific Division in 2009–10 and folded in 2015.

The American Hockey League announced on January 29, 2015 that the Oklahoma City Barons were moving to California. The Condors name followed on February 25. The new club became the main development affiliate of the Edmonton Oilers, and it took the Oilers' orange and blue. Darnell Nurse, Dylan Holloway and Stuart Skinner all passed through Bakersfield on the way to the NHL.

The Dignity Health Arena opened in 1998 and has carried four names, including Centennial Garden and Rabobank Arena. It holds 8,700 for hockey. In 2015 the Condors played in the AHL's first outdoor game in California. They hosted the Condorstown Outdoor Classic there in 2017.

The team won the AHL Pacific Division in 2018–19. In 2019 it also met the San Diego Gulls in the division finals. The two clubs call their rivalry the "Battle of the Birds". The second division title, in 2020–21, came out of a tournament format because of the COVID-19 pandemic. That season the Condors received the John D. Chick Trophy.

The Calder Cup, the AHL's championship trophy, has never come to Bakersfield.
