In San Diego the Gulls name has come and gone with the leagues. The first team to use it skated in the Western Hockey League from 1966 to 1974. Later versions played in the International Hockey League, the West Coast Hockey League and the ECHL, and that last one ended in 2006.

It came back through Anaheim. Henry and Susan Samueli, who own the Anaheim Ducks, bought the Norfolk Admirals and moved the franchise to California. The new name and logo were unveiled on 22 February 2015. The Gulls play in the American Hockey League (AHL) as the Ducks' affiliate. Trevor Zegras and Mason McTavish both passed through San Diego before their NHL careers.

Home is Pechanga Arena, which has carried three other names, San Diego Sports Arena, Valley View Casino Center and iPayOne Center. It holds 12,920 for hockey. The nearest rivalry is with the Ontario Reign, whom the Gulls meet year after year in the Pacific Division.

For 2016–17 the league gave the Gulls its President's Award as team of the year. The Calder Cup, the Pacific Division regular-season title and the John D. Chick Trophy have all stayed out of reach.
