Before Charlotte, there was Albany. From 1993 the franchise played in New York's capital as the River Rats, and in 2010 it moved south to North Carolina and became the Checkers. Bojangles Coliseum, which holds 8,600 for hockey, was the rink they moved into.

In 2018–19 the Checkers finished top of the regular season with 110 points, which earned the Macgregor Kilpatrick Trophy. They then beat the Chicago Wolves in five games to win the Calder Cup, the club's first. That spring they also took the Atlantic Division and the Eastern Conference.

The Hershey Bears have become the opponent Charlotte keeps meeting in the playoffs, with series in 2019, 2023, 2024 and 2025.

The most recent Eastern Conference title came in 2025, the same year as the last of those Hershey series.
