The Phantoms exist to develop players for the Philadelphia Flyers, and the franchise has moved twice to keep doing that. It began in 1996 as the Philadelphia Phantoms. Under that name it won both of its Calder Cups, the American Hockey League (AHL) championship: in 1998, beating the St. John Flames 4-2, and in 2005, when it swept the Chicago Wolves 4-0.

In 2009 the team left Pennsylvania for Glens Falls, New York, and spent five seasons as the Adirondack Phantoms. It returned to Pennsylvania in 2014, this time to Allentown. Play did not begin until the 2014–15 season, after litigation over the construction of the PPL Center delayed the move. The arena seats about 8,500. Black, orange and purple are the colours, and the supporters' club is called the PhanClub.

Sean Couturier and Carter Hart are among the players who came through the club. The rivalries are with the Hershey Bears and the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

The Lehigh Valley name has one banner so far. In 2017–18 the Phantoms won the Atlantic Division and reached the Eastern Conference Final, where the Toronto Marlies ended their run.
