The Barracuda have never won the Calder Cup. In 2016–17, their second year in San Jose, they finished top of the Pacific Division and took the Western Conference regular-season title, which earned them the John Chick Trophy and the Bud Poile Trophy. They reached the Western Conference Finals and lost there to the Grand Rapids Griffins.

The franchise arrived in California with a long past. It began in 1996 as the Kentucky Thoroughblades, became the Cleveland Barons in 2001, and from 2006 was the Worcester Sharks. On January 29, 2015, it moved to San Jose and took the Barracuda name, tied to a presenting sponsorship with Barracuda Networks. Its purpose has not changed since the Worcester years: it is the American Hockey League (AHL) development affiliate of the National Hockey League's San Jose Sharks. Players such as Evander Kane, Barclay Goodrow and Ilya Samsonov passed through it on their way up.

Roy Sommer, the long-time coach, is the name most closely tied to the club. He became the AHL's all-time winningest coach and moved into an advisory role in 2022. In January 2026 the club raised a banner for Sommer.

The nearest opponent is the Stockton Heat, and games against them carry the label "NorCal rivalry". Under McCarthy the job is still to prepare the Sharks' prospects, among them Filip Bystedt and Yaroslav Askarov, for the NHL.
